African Black Soap Ingredients

African black soap is originally from West Africa and is globally known for its excellent skin and hair effects.  It contains no chemicals and has several benefits to the skin and hair.

Raw African Black Soap Ingredients

Raw African black soap is made from Shea butter, dried plantain skin, the bark of Agow tree, banana leaves, virgin palm kernel organic honey, cocoa pods and aloe Vera.

Organic honey is known to be an excellent healer of various skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It is also used as a softening lip palm that is helpful for those who have weathered cracked or chapped lips.

Palm kernel oil is rich in tacotrienal and tocophrals, both of which are good antioxidants. Perm kernel is extracted from African palm tree fruits. Besides being a natural antioxidant, it is also useful in hardening of the soap and production of lather.

Palm oil is also rich in lauric acid which helps in the destruction of viruses, bacteria, fungus and other organisms which are harmful to the skin or hair. It works almost in a similar way as coconut oil.

Cocoa butter contains many different types of vitamins, for example, vitamin A and E, which are very crucial for the prevention of skin disease and growth of hair. Cocoa butter is extracted from cocoa bean and is often recommended for the treatment of dermatitis and eczema.

Plantain skin is burned and its ash is mixed with other ingredients. It is rich in potassium hydroxide which is helpful in the removal of dead skin. It also gives the soap its distinctive color.

Shea Moisture African Black Soap Ingredients

She Butter, the ingredient that is vital in moisturizing your skin is mainly found in the tropics of Africa. She butter is a rare ingredient because the Shea-Karate tree which produces it begins to bear fruits after fifteen years. That is a long period compared to the demand for the fruits. Africans have, for many generations, used Shea butter to rejuvenate and protect their hair and skin.

The unique healing properties of Shea butter are mainly derived from the fatty acids contained in its fruits. Traditionally, the product was extracted by people who collected, cracked, grilled and pounded the nuts. They were then boiled for many hours until the Shea butter came to the surface. It could then be scooped and stored guards till they cool and settle.

At room temperature, the, it is solid although it easily liquefies when applied on human body. Raw Shea butter is a natural product that widely varies in smell, appearance or quality depending on how it has been refined or where it was initially produced. Today, other parts of the continent such as east Africa is producing large quantities of She Butter that is equally good in the production of African black soap or other natural soaps.

Good quality Shea butter is in three forms:

The highly refined type is white in color. Most companies selling Shea butter sell it in this form.

The moderately refined types have many of its natural components intact. The user will still need to further refine it. This should be done with caution to avoid compromising its nutritional value.

The raw or unfeigned Shea butter ranges from grayish yellow to creamy. This is the form that has mainly been extracted using water.

It does not need to be refrigerated because it is safe at room temperature.  However, it is more effective if it is used within a year or two. The ingredients are likely to break down after this period making it ineffective.

Nubian Heritage African Black Soap Ingredients

Nubian Heritage African black soap contains Aloe Vera, papaya, Vitamin E, oats, plantain feel extract Shea butter and palm ash. Most of the ingredients used in the making of this soap have detoxifying, acne fighting and healing properties.

It combines the moisturizing properties of Shea butter with the ancient medical properties of plantain skin, papaya and palm ash. Wondering how to make black soap at home? Wonder no more.In this article, I outline the various procedure to make black soap liquids, bars and shampoos – at home. The process is not as hard as rocket science. If you follow the procedures outlined therein you will be no less than an expert.

How to Make Liquid Black Soap

In order to make liquid African black soap, you will need the following ingredients and materials:

  • A plastic container
  • Measuring spoons
  • An empty bottle
  • Aluminum foil or saran wrap
  • Raw African black soap
  • A few drops of vitamin E oil
  • 1 tea spoon of jojoba oil
  • Grater
  • Two cups of distilled water

After preparing the above ingredients and materials, it is time to make your soap. The procedure on how to make liquid black soap involves:

  1. Start by braking off parts of the black soap and place it in the plastic container. Grating it is better than breaking it because it is less messy and easier.
  2. Pour the two cups of distilled water to the black soap.
  3. Add about ten drop of vitamin E. oil
  4. Add vegetable glycerin-one tablespoon
  5. Stir the ingredients, cover and let it stay overnight or about five hours.
  6. Add the mixture to the empty bottle
  7. Shake the mixture every time you use it to properly mix the ingredients. Some of the ingredients settle at the bottom while others remain on top. Pouring them without shaking is likely to cause an imbalance of ingredients used.
  8. You can use your hands to break up any solid soap that did not liquefy. If the quantity of solid soap is still high, you can leave the solution for more hours till a good proportion completely liquefy.
  9. Use a small-hole strainer or cheese cloth when pouring it into the bottle and if necessary add your favorite oils or herbal extracts after bottling. The oils or herbal extracts should form less than 5% of the total solution.
  10. The mixture can easily fit one bottle. However, if you need more than one bottle you have to adjust the ingredients. A single bottle can take you for a couple of weeks.  Black soap can be conveniently used in liquid form because it easily gets soggy when used in solid form.

How to Make Black Soap Shampoo

  • You will need:
  • 50 grams of black soap
  • 2 cups of filtered water
  • 2 teaspoons of pure honey
  • 2 teaspoons of extra virgin oil
  • 2 teaspoons of vitamin E
  • 1 teaspoon of aloe Vera
  • 1 teaspoon of glycerin
  • 10 drops of essential oil- I recommend olive oil. There are a variety of others though, for example, rosemary, sweet orange, cinnamon, lemon grass, lavender, sage and many others.

The following procedure can then be followed if you want to know how to make black soap shampoo:

  1. Cut or grate the soap into small shavings and place them in a spray bottle or applicator.
  2. Add all the ingredients
  3. Add warm water
  4. Shake vigorously until the soap is fully dissolved. Alternatively leave the solution for about 5 hours to dissolve on the own, and then shake gently.

All the ingredients listed above are very useful to your hair. For example, glycerin moisturizes your hair leaving it very soft. The vitamin E oil is good acts as an air conditioner and alleviates dry air conditions.

Do not boil the soap or its mixture.

You can use it like any other shampoo.

Store the remainder of shampoo in a tightly closed container to preserve it an avoid wastage.

How to Make Black Soap Bars 20

Apart from the shampoos discussed earlier, you may be curious to make black soap bars. The active ingredients of the African black soap bars  which would be needed here include:

  • Cocoa pods
  • Palm kernels
  • Coconut
  • Plantain leaves
  • Virgin olive oils
  • Naturally occurring glycerin
  • Virgin olive oil
  • Potash from plantain leaves
  • Shea bark
  • Molds

Both potash and plantain skin are a source of vitamin A and E. Glycerin is necessary for the retention of moisture in the skin and hair. Palm oil and Shea butter are great source of oils. They are therefore good for dry hair or skin.

Palm kernel oil also has lubricating properties that make it work well as a moisturizer. Although it has several oils the final product from this ingredients are not oily but rough with an earthy smell.

Steps to be followed when making black soap bars include:

  1. Extract oil from coconut husks to create base oil. Oil can also be extracted from the Shea tree bark. The oil should not be more than half broiler capacity.
  2. Use the broiler heat the oil until it reaches a smooth consistency.
  3. Burn the cocoa pods and plantain skins together then collect the ashes and put it in a bowl
  4. Add distilled water and continue stirring the mixture until you rich a desired consistency.
  5. Add the ash mixture to the oil in the broiler and continue stirring until the mixture turns deep dark brown. Reduce the heating temperature and continue stirring.
  6. You can personalize the mixture by adding fragrance, for example, lavender oil or any other oils of your taste.
  7. Any films of liquid soap that forms on the broiler sides should be scooped and transferred to the molds.
  8. Scoop the rest of the soap into the same molds and leave them for about two weeks to harden.

Important note: African black soap easily dissolves in moisturized environments. Make sure it is stored in a dry place after cutting into smaller cubes-to any desired number.
