This condition can be corrected and he contemplates having an eye surgery since it is also affecting his vision. In particular, Whitaker loses sight when he looks upwards.

What is Ptosis (Droopy Eye Lid)

Ptosis or droopy eyelid is characterized by the sagging of the eyelids. This condition can impair your vision in some cases. However, you should note that this depends on the size of pupil that is obstructed. The drooping of eyelid may be slight, but can also obstruct the whole pupil.

On what causes a droopy eyelids, this condition stems from benign or even more serious causes affecting muscles, skin and nerves of the eyelid leading to Ptosis. A combination of factors affecting nerves, muscle and eyelid skin may lead to this condition.

These factors weaken the elevator muscle of the eye- which is responsible for up and down movement of the eyelid. It may also result from Horner syndrome.

Levator muscle may also be affected through injury and aging, while some are genetic- like the one for Forest Whitaker. This condition may also result from serious health disorder including brain tumor, stroke and cancer of the muscles and nerves.

Neurological condition affecting muscles and nerves of the eye including myasthenia gravis could also cause Ptosis. The following are symptoms of Ptosis of lazy eye:

  • Dropping of the eyelid
  • Enhanced tearing and tired looking face
  • Impaired vision
  • Extremely dry or watery eyes

Treatment of Ptosis

Treatment of Ptosis depends on the nature of symptoms-with mild treatment used for mild Ptosis symptoms and so forth. The treatment will also depend on underlying cause of Ptosis.

For example, wearing glasses featuring a crutch may be prescribed to help in holding up the eyelid thus correcting uneven cornea curve that affects your vision. You may also wear an eye patch to strengthen your vision.

Surgery of the weaker eye may be used in moderate to severe Ptosis. The most common surgery is Levator aponeurosis advancement for lifting up the eyelid and tightening Levator tendon.

Note that Levator muscle will be too weak to open the eyelid during surgery- in this case a sling is applied to boost the forehead muscles and help lift up the eyelid.

Other than surgery, which is still the most efficient in correcting Ptosis, a number of other remedies may also be used to treat certain droopy eyelids. Some natural treatments for Ptosis include:

  • Chamomile tea
  • Herbal remedies
  • Helpful nutrients
  • Homeopathy

Droopy eyelids exercises are also natural treatment methods commonly used to fix the condition. Several exercises have been successfully used to tone down the eyelid muscles. Here are common droopy eyelid exercises:

  • One eye exercise
  • Upper eyelid stretches
  • Lower eyelid squints
  • Yogic eye exercise
  • Patch exercise
